bum steer
Плохой совет, иногда заведомо ложная информация. Это выражение пришло из морского жаргона и обозначало неверную навигационную информацию, в результате которой корабль двигался (steered) в неправильном (bum) направлении. Сейчас оно означает что-либо ложное или то, что невозможно исправить, починить.

Ivan bought a car very cheaply, but I'm afraid he's got himself a bum steer. — Иван купил машину задёшево, но я боюсь, что он приобрёл кучу металлолома.
